1810 Hand-Coloured Engraving - Abyssinians Resting on a March, Ethiopia

About the Item

1810 Hand-Coloured Engraving - Abyssinians Resting on a March, Ethiopia Description: This 1810 hand-coloured copperplate engraving from Carl Bertuch's "Bilderbuch für Kinder" ("Picture Book for Children") illustrates a group of Abyssinians (Ethiopians) resting during a march. The image provides a glimpse into the life and customs of the Abyssinian people in the early 19th century. The group of men, dressed in white robes and black sheepskins, is depicted resting under a tree, surrounded by natural scenery with rolling hills in the background. They are armed with spears and shields, indicating their readiness for travel through possibly hostile terrain. A horse, loaded with supplies, stands beside them, adding a sense of movement and journey to the scene. The "Bilderbuch für Kinder" was an ambitious 12-volume encyclopedia for children published from 1790 to 1830, featuring nearly 1,200 engraved plates covering a wide range of subjects such as natural history, mythology, and world cultures. Carl Bertuch, the publisher, aimed to inspire curiosity and provide young readers with an illustrated guide to the world's wonders. The scene is based on George Annesley, Viscount Valentia’s "Voyages and Travels," with illustrations by artist Henry Salt, published in 1809. Salt’s work on Ethiopian culture provided European audiences with a rare and detailed view of life in Abyssinia (modern-day Ethiopia), depicting the unique attire, customs, and daily practices of the people he encountered. The detailed engraving and careful hand colouring bring the scene to life, capturing the rich traditions and resilience of the Abyssinian people.
