1855 Ceremonial Procession in Switzerland – The Riders & Their Leader and Banner
About the Item
Title: 1855 Ceremonial Procession – The Riders with Their Leader and Banner
This striking hand-colored lithograph, created by H. Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, is part of the *Fest Album* commemorating Bern’s entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353. Published in Bern and Zurich in 1855, this large oblong folio celebrates the grand historical reenactments of 1853, which showcased Switzerland’s medieval military traditions, alliances, and civic pride through elaborate processions.
The illustration depicts a disciplined military parade featuring two mounted leaders at the forefront, followed by a regiment of soldiers in perfectly synchronized formation. The commanding figure on the left rides a majestic white horse, draped in a richly decorated caparison with red and gold patterns. He is clad in a stately red tunic over a suit of armor, his helmet adorned with white and red plumes. His upright posture and firm grip on the reins convey an air of authority, symbolizing the leadership and strength of Swiss military commanders.
Beside him, a second rider, dressed in matching red and silver, carries a long pike and wears a shield on his left arm emblazoned with the crossed halberds, a traditional emblem of Swiss martial prowess. His deep red attire and feathered hat suggest his role as a ranking officer overseeing the infantry behind him. His brown horse, though slightly smaller, moves in unison with the leading steed, reinforcing the sense of discipline and order in the procession.
Marching behind them, a regiment of Swiss halberdiers advances in perfect formation. Dressed in red doublets with white trim, white hose, and feathered hats, they carry long halberds, a weapon closely associated with Swiss infantry tactics. Their leader holds a red banner with crossed halberds, which waves proudly in the wind, symbolizing the unity and military strength of the Confederation. Their forward-facing expressions and coordinated movement reflect the reputation of Swiss mercenaries as some of the most disciplined and formidable fighters of the medieval and Renaissance periods.
This lithograph is a fine example of 19th-century Romanticism’s fascination with medieval and Renaissance military traditions. The detailed rendering of armor, textiles, and weapons showcases the technical skill of lithographic artistry at the time. The composition’s symmetry and dynamic movement create a visually powerful representation of Swiss military heritage and national pride.
Condition Summary:
The lithograph remains in good condition, with rich hand coloring that enhances the depth and contrast of the red and silver uniforms. Minor signs of aging, such as light foxing in the margins, are present but do not detract from the overall aesthetic appeal. The paper remains strong and well-preserved, making this a valuable collectible for historical enthusiasts.
Framing Tips:
For the best display, use a high-quality frame with UV-protected museum glass or acrylic to prevent fading. A wide mat border in neutral or warm tones will enhance the contrast of the red and white uniforms while maintaining an elegant presentation. A dark wooden or gold-accented frame will complement the historical significance of the piece. Using archival mounting materials will ensure its long-term preservation.

"The British Surrendering their Arms to Gen. Washington..." after Renault, 1819
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an engraving entitled “The British surrendering their arms to Gen. Washington after their defeat at Yorktown Virginia October 1781.” The dedication continues in the bottom margin, “To the defenders of American independence, this print is most respectfully inscribed by their fellow citizen, Jn. Fcis. Renault, assistant secretary to the Count de Grass, and engineer to the French Army, at the siege of York.” The engraving is after a painting by John Francis Renault, and engraved by Tanner, Vallance, Kearny & Co. and William Allen, in Philadelphia in January of 1819.
This historic print depicts the surrender of the British forces after the Battle of Yorktown. The print shows Lord Cornwallis offering his sword to the Duke de Lauzun, who defers the weapon to General Washington. British officers stand with Cornwallis on the right and French and American officers are shown at center and left. The immediate background is filled with an elaborate allegorical scene. Behind the British troops is a female representation of “Discord,” wearing a billowing robes and liberty cap and floating on storm clouds, as she sends lightning bolts to up-end the British people and a chariot below her. Behind the American and French officers, “Prosperity” stands next to an overflowing cornucopia, with “Justice”, an infant child with a paddle inscribed “American Constitution,” representing the helm of statehood. They crowd around a neoclassical monument with a giant urn...
