About the Item

1856 Hand-Colored Lithograph of Rhinoceros Beetles – Natural History Illustration of Exotic Coleoptera This illustration depicts rhinoceros beetles, likely a species from the genus *Dynastes* or *Oryctes*, given the prominent horn on the larger beetle. These beetles are known for their impressive size and striking features, particularly the males, which use their horns for combat during mating contests. The smaller beetle in the foreground is likely a female, as females typically lack the prominent horns seen on males. Historical Context: The year “1856” on this plate suggests it is a hand-colored lithograph from a mid-19th-century natural history book. Beetles were popular subjects in entomological studies and illustrations of this period due to their diverse forms and ecological significance. Such works often aimed to educate European audiences about exotic species discovered during colonial expeditions. Description: This beautifully hand-colored lithograph, dated 1856, showcases a pair of rhinoceros beetles in exquisite detail. The larger male beetle features an impressive horn, while the smaller beetle in the foreground likely represents the female of the species. The composition highlights their natural habitat, depicted with carefully rendered leaves and branches, emphasizing the artist’s commitment to both scientific accuracy and aesthetic beauty. The lithograph is mounted on a thin cream-colored mat with decorative borders, enhancing its presentation. The plate number “40” and year “1856” are clearly marked, attesting to its authenticity and origin in a high-quality natural history publication of the period. Condition Report: - The colors remain vivid and well-preserved, retaining the vibrant appeal characteristic of hand-colored works. - The paper shows light age-related toning, typical of a piece over 160 years old. - Minimal foxing is visible, mostly confined to the margins, leaving the central illustration unaffected. - Mounted on a cream-colored mat, ready for framing and display.

Entomological Elegance: A Collection of 19th Century Beetle Engravings
Located in Langweer, NL
The images are finely detailed engravings of beetles from a 19th-century scientific collection. Each beetle is rendered with precision, showcasing their unique physical characteristics, such as the segmentation of their bodies, the texture of their carapaces, the patterns and colors of their wing covers (elytra), and the varying shapes and lengths of their antennae and legs. The species, as labeled in the engravings, are as follows: From the first image: 1. **Apidie** - Possibly a reference to the Apidae family, which includes bees, but in this context, it likely refers to a type of beetle. 2. **Attelabe** - Likely a variant of the name for beetles in the family Attelabidae, known as leaf-rolling beetles. 3. **Bousier** - Common French name for dung beetles, which are part of the Scarabaeidae family. 4. **Cétoine** - Refers to beetles in the subfamily Cetoniinae, known as flower beetles. 5. **Geotrupe** - A genus of earth-boring dung beetles. 6. **Hanneton** - Common French name for beetles in the family Scarabaeidae, particularly the June beetles or May bugs. 7. **Oryctes** - A genus that includes the rhinoceros beetles. 8. **Trichie** - Refers to beetles in the genus Trichius, which are often found in flowers and resemble small bumblebees. From the second image: 1. **Attelabe** - Again, likely referring to the Attelabidae family of leaf-rolling beetles. 2. **Calosoma** - A genus of ground beetles...

These illustrations were part of an entomological reference in "Dictionnaire Classique des Sciences Naturelles" by Pierre Auguste Joseph Drapiez. These beetles would have been represented to aid in the scientific study and categorization of insect species...

By Louis Prang
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Stag Beetle & Longicorn Beetle" is an original color lithograph by Louis Prang. It depicts two forest-dwelling beetles. The artist signed the piece in the stone lower left. It was published by Selmar Hess in New York. 8" x 5" art 19 3/8" x 16" framed Louis Prang (March 12, 1824 – September 14, 1909) was an American printer, lithographer, publisher, and Georgist. He is sometimes known as the "father of the American Christmas card". Prang's early activities in the US publishing architectural books and making leather goods were not very successful, and he began to make wood engravings for illustrations in books. In 1851 he worked for Frank Leslie, art director for Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion, and later with John Andrew. In 1851, he married Rosa Gerber, a Swiss woman he had met in Paris in 1846. In 1856, Prang and a partner created a firm, Prang and Mayer, to produce lithographs. The company specialized in prints of buildings...
