1894 Chromolithograph of Birds of Paradise – A Historical Interpretation

About the Item

Title: Birds of Paradise Display – Chromolithograph from Brockhaus' Konversations-Lexikon, 1894 This chromolithograph from the 1894 edition of *Brockhaus' Konversations-Lexikon* depicts several species of Birds of Paradise in supposed display poses. While vibrant and visually striking, the representations of these birds’ behaviors were largely speculative, as they were based on museum specimens and artistic interpretation rather than field observations. 1. The pose for 'Paradisea rubra' (labeled 1) is inaccurate, showing the pose of Goldie's bird-of-paradise (*Paradisaea decora*). 2. 'The Superb Bird of Paradise' (2) is incorrectly illustrated; in reality, this bird produces the famous "smiley face" display seen in *BBC Planet Earth*. 3. 'Wilson’s Bird of Paradise' (3) is shown correctly, but it is not in a display posture. 4. The 'Standardwing Bird of Paradise' (4) is depicted inaccurately, as it is not displaying here. 5. The 'Blue Bird of Paradise' (5) should be shown hanging upside down during its display, revealing a red crescent on its chest. During the late 19th century, these birds were primarily known from preserved specimens in museums and the millinery trade. Artists had to rely on conjecture to represent their behaviors. Accurate descriptions and depictions of their extraordinary displays would not emerge until the latter half of the 20th century when their behaviors were observed and documented in the wild. The print, produced by F. A. Brockhaus in Leipzig, Berlin, and Vienna, reflects the era's fascination with exotic species and the limitations of scientific knowledge at the time. It remains a fascinating historical artifact, offering insight into how these birds were perceived in the late 19th century. The vibrant chromolithograph is presented in very good condition, mounted in a cream matting board that enhances its vibrant colors.
