About the Item

A miner emerges from the shadows of a tunnel in this lithograph by Francisco Mora. He looks overworked and tired. This litho was part of a collection of pieces that were created to attract the attention of an American audience. The Cleveland Museum of art states that workers in Mexican silver mines were a favorite subject of Mora. It was a way to shine a spotlight on social issues for the artist. The lighting technique makes me think of Rembrandt, except that here, Mora hopes to illustrate the class difference between a miner and the rest of society. Printmaking was a way to increase awareness of social issues. There is something poignant about this lithograph, which was acquired at auction. The condition is good, but the framing needs a little conservancy at the back. There were 300 pieces of this print.
