19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of a Drummer on Horseback in Medieval Attire

About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of a Drummer on Horseback in Medieval Attire This original hand-coloured lithograph, dating from 1842, provides a captivating look into the ceremonial world of medieval-style pageantry. It hails from the acclaimed publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, printed in Stuttgart by Carl Hoffmann. The work was artistically guided by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch, with historical insights and scholarly commentary contributed by Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, both of whom sought to present an authentic, richly illustrated perspective on the European chivalric tradition. In this scene, a mounted drummer confidently guides his horse while skillfully beating a large decorated drum. Dressed in a rich red doublet paired with blue and white accents, he embodies the spirit of festive heraldry and courtly celebration. The horse, carefully depicted with lifelike musculature, glossy coat, and finely rendered bridle, reflects the meticulous attention to detail that characterizes this print. The instrument’s vibrant blue panels and brass fittings, as well as the careful shading and crisp outline, reveal the exceptional craftsmanship of the lithographer. The print’s condition is impressive, considering its age. Minor toning and gentle wear along the margins do not detract from the clarity of the image or the strength of its colours. Collectors interested in historical costume, ceremonial traditions, or medieval-inspired compositions will find this piece highly appealing. Its combination of artistic merit, historical authenticity, and evocative subject matter ensures that it will serve as an engaging focal point in any refined collection or display.
