About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of Medieval Musicians on Horseback This captivating original hand-coloured lithograph, dating to 1842, offers a vivid glimpse into the ceremonial and festive side of medieval culture. The image is drawn from the celebrated publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, produced in Stuttgart by the publishing house of Carl Hoffmann. The work was artistically enriched by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch and given historical depth through the insights of Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, both of whom endeavored to present an authentic, richly illustrated account of European chivalry and its accompanying traditions. In this particular scene, two musicians ride atop finely bred horses, the duo attired in vibrant red and blue garments. One plays a pipe or fife, while his companion carries a large drum slung to one side, evoking the resonant sounds that would have echoed through castle courtyards or accompanied traveling retinues. The horses, depicted with remarkable attention to muscular structure, texture, and even the subtle gleam of their bridles, lend a sense of movement and life to the composition. The lithograph is in very good condition for its age, with rich, carefully applied hand-colouring that accentuates every detail. Minor age toning and light edge wear do not detract from the overall appeal. This rare and evocative piece is an excellent choice for collectors seeking historically significant artwork that brings to life the pageantry, music, and culture of bygone eras. It will serve as a fine display piece and a conversation starter in any distinguished collection.
