19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of a Procession with Horses and Trumpets

About the Item

19th-Century Hand-Coloured Print of a Procession with Horses and Trumpets This exceptional original hand-coloured lithograph, dating from the mid-19th century, offers a captivating glimpse into the pomp and ceremony of a medieval or Renaissance-style procession. It originates from the renowned publication *Der Rittersaal: Eine Geschichte des Ritterthums*, issued in 1842 by the Stuttgart-based publisher Carl Hoffmann. The work was artistically rendered by Friedrich Martin von Reibisch, with historical commentary by Dr. Franz Kottenkamp, who together sought to illuminate the grandeur and traditions of European chivalry. The scene portrays a herald, elegantly attired in a richly coloured doublet, leading a trio of finely bred horses. Each horse is depicted with remarkable realism, from the sheen of their coats to the subtle musculature of their legs. The herald himself carries a trumpet, while two additional trumpets extend from a decorative bar above, their bright brass tones symbolically announcing the approach of noble visitors or the commencement of a prestigious event. The strong presence of blue and red hues, delicately applied by hand, elevates the visual impact of this piece. The print remains in very good condition for its age. Light age-toning and a few minor spots are present but do not detract from the clarity or vibrancy of the hand-applied colouring. Such imperfections serve as a testament to its historical authenticity. This print will appeal to collectors of historical costume, equestrian art, or medieval and Renaissance pageantry, offering both aesthetic pleasure and a meaningful connection to Europe’s knightly past. It is a distinguished and conversation-worthy addition to any curated collection.
