19th-Century Lithograph of Seals and Elephant Seals in Arctic and Marine Habitat

About the Item

19th-Century Lithograph of Seals and Elephant Seals in Arctic and Marine Habitats Description: This detailed 19th-century lithograph presents three species of marine mammals: the common seal (Phoca vitulina), labeled "De gemeene Zechond," the ringed seal (Pusa hispida), labeled "De Zechond met ringvormige vlekken," and the elephant seal (Mirounga), labeled "De Rob met den Tromp." Originally published in 'De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst', this print offers a scientifically accurate representation of these remarkable marine creatures. At the top, the common seal is depicted in its typical resting position on ice, accompanied by a playful pup. Native to the North Atlantic and Pacific coastal regions, this species is known for its adaptability to both salt and freshwater environments. The middle illustration showcases the ringed seal, easily recognized by the circular patterns on its coat. This species inhabits Arctic regions, where it relies on breathing holes in sea ice. The lower illustration features the elephant seal, distinguished by its large, trunk-like snout. Native to the subantarctic and Pacific coasts, this massive marine mammal is known for its deep-diving abilities and dramatic mating displays. The artist has captured its robust, blubbery body and characteristic resting posture, emphasizing its unique adaptations to cold ocean waters. Created by C.C. G. Zool. and printed by La Haye & J. L. G. V., this lithograph is an excellent addition to any collection of antique natural history prints, marine biology illustrations, and early zoological studies. Keywords: 19th Century, Lithograph, Natural History, Marine Mammals, Seals, Elephant Seal, Common Seal, Ringed Seal, Phoca Vitulina, Pusa Hispida, Mirounga, Arctic Wildlife, Antarctic Wildlife, Scientific Illustration, Antique Print, Taxonomy, Netherlands, La Haye, J.L.G.V. --- Condition Summary: The print is in good condition, with mild age-related toning and some light foxing primarily along the edges. The fine lithographic details remain sharp, particularly in the textures of the seals’ fur and the icy landscape. There are no major tears or folds, though slight irregularities from past binding are present. A highly collectible and well-preserved zoological illustration. --- Framing Tips: For optimal presentation, use an acid-free mat in soft white or pale blue to complement the icy tones of the illustration. A dark wooden or silver frame will enhance the print’s contrast, emphasizing the seals' detailed features. UV-protective glass is recommended to prevent fading. When displayed alongside other marine life lithographs, matching frames can create a refined and cohesive arrangement.

19th-Century Lithograph of the Puma and Cheetah in Graceful Stances This exquisite 19th-century lithograph showcases two remarkable big cats: the cougar, or puma (De Couguar of puma), and the cheetah, referred to as the "tiger wolf" (De Tijgerwolf of Gepard). Originally published in *De Zoogdieren: afgebeeld en in hunne levenswijze geschetst*, this illustration captures the physical differences between these two agile predators with remarkable accuracy. The puma (Puma concolor), also known as the mountain lion, is native to the Americas, ranging from Canada to Patagonia. Unlike other big cats, pumas lack the ability to roar, making them more closely related to smaller feline species. They are solitary hunters known for their stealth and adaptability to various terrains, from dense forests to arid deserts. The cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus...
