After Carracci, Atlantes from the Farnese Palace, 2 Engravings, 17th Century ?

About the Item

These engravings, imitating the red chalk technique, represent the preparatory work for the Atlantes in the Farnese Gallery in Rome, according to Carracci. There we find the mentions "Francus Collignon formis, Cum Priuil. S. Pontifacis" and "C. Cesi fecit romae", as well as the page numbers 18 and 19. François Collignon (1609-1687) worked and distributed his works for many years in Rome as an engraver and print dealer. The engraver Carlo Cesio (1626-1686) is also mentioned. The ceiling frescoes of the Farnese Gallery in Rome were created by Annibale Carracci between 1597 and 1607, with the help of his brothers and students. This prestigious commission from Cardinal Farnese is a masterpiece of ceiling painting, inspired by mythological scenes, stories told in Ovid's Metamorphoses and allegorical content. The engravings show some foxing, stains and folds. The dimensions of each engraving are 57 x 54 cm (with frame) and 39.5 x 36.5 cm (without frame).
