About the Item

Antique 1828 Hand-Colored Satirical Print Great Skills Have They in Palmistry This charming and humorous hand-colored etching is titled Great Skills Have They in Palmistry and was published in 1828 as part of the series Monkeyana, or Men in Miniature. The work belongs to a delightful and clever collection by British artist Thomas Landseer, which anthropomorphizes monkeys to mirror and mock human behavior in a satirical yet sophisticated manner. In this composition, a group of monkeys are depicted engaging in a palm reading session amidst a pastoral setting. At left, a hooded monkey fortune-teller reads the palm of a fashionably dressed female monkey seated at right. The female, adorned with a bonnet, scarf, and red skirt, looks both intrigued and slightly skeptical. Behind her sits a male companion in a top hat, observing the scene. Their attire and expressions capture the theatricality of early 19th-century romantic and social life. The caption beneath the image reads: Great skills have they in Palmistry This print showcases Landseer’s signature style—delicate line etching combined with expressive features and lively hand-coloring. The scene pokes fun at popular beliefs in palmistry and fortune-telling while offering a satirical take on vanity, courtship, and credulity. Monkeyana was widely appreciated not just for its artistic merit but also for its witty social commentary, and works from the series remain popular with collectors of satirical and anthropomorphic art. This example is printed on laid paper, retaining strong plate marks, and is signed in the plate with Landseer’s initials. A fine piece of 19th-century visual satire, this print is ideal for collectors of antique prints, humorous art, or those with an interest in Victorian-era customs and caricature. Beautifully composed and richly detailed, it is both a conversation piece and a glimpse into the social quirks of the period.
