About the Item

Antique botanical prints of Ostrich Fern, Pteris & Spider Fern, 1897 This beautiful set of three original chromolithographs, published in 1897 in Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse by Edward Step, presents a refined study of three distinctive fern varieties. The plates were printed with great accuracy and detail, using high-quality chromolithographic techniques typical of late 19th-century botanical works. The first plate, Ostrich Fern (Onoclea germanica), also known as Matteuccia struthiopteris, shows the elegant fronds of this hardy perennial fern, prized for its feathery, plume-like appearance. Native to temperate regions, it is commonly used in ornamental gardens and valued for its vigorous growth. The second plate depicts Pteris quadriaurita var. argyrea, sometimes referred to as the Silver Brake Fern, notable for its striking fronds marked with silvery veins. Originating in tropical Asia, it was a popular greenhouse fern in Victorian collections and remains admired for its decorative quality. The third plate shows Spider Fern (Pteris serrulata), with its long, narrow, serrated fronds that give the plant its common name. Native to Asia and Australasia, this fern was widely cultivated in Europe during the 19th century as part of the Victorian fern craze, known as “pteridomania.” Together, these plates provide not only a botanical record but also a glimpse into the fascination with exotic plants that characterized late 19th-century horticulture. Their vivid green tones and fine detailing make them ideal for display, either as individual works or as a harmonious set of three. Collectors of botanical prints and those with an interest in Victorian natural history will find this group particularly appealing. Condition report: The prints are in very good condition, with only light age toning consistent with works of this period. Plate marks are visible, enhancing their authenticity. Sold as prints, not with frame. Paper edges show minor handling wear, not affecting the images. Framing tips: These fern prints would be striking when framed as a set. Consider mounting them in a simple dark wooden or black frame with a cream or light green mat to enhance the vibrant green of the fronds. Hung together, they create a naturalistic and elegant botanical display. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Edward Step, London, 1897 Sold as prints, not with frame.

Antique Hand-Colored Fern Prints - Aspidium Species - 19th Century Botanical Art
Located in Langweer, NL
Antique Hand-Colored Fern Prints - Aspidium Species - 19th Century Botanical Art This rare set of three hand-colored fern prints features detailed illustrations of various species of **Aspidium**. These botanical prints are part of the renowned 19th-century collection, *Ferns: British and Exotic*, showcasing the meticulous botanical artistry of the Victorian period. The ferns illustrated in this set include: - **Aspidium augustescens** (Majestic Shield Fern): This species is known for its symmetrical fronds and graceful appearance. The print showcases the fine detailing of the fern’s structure, capturing the natural elegance of its leaves. - **Aspidium acuminatum** (Pointed Shield Fern): This species is noted for its sharply pointed fronds and dense arrangement of sori (spore clusters). The print emphasizes the intricate texture of the fronds and the distinct shape of the reproductive structures. - **Aspidium proliferum** (Proliferous Shield Fern): This fern is characterized by its broad fronds and ability to produce multiple offshoots. The illustration captures the density and lush growth habit of the species, with precise attention to the arrangement of the spore clusters. These prints come from E.J. Lowe’s famous botanical work, *Ferns: British and Exotic*, which was published between 1856 and 1860. Edward Joseph Lowe was a distinguished Victorian botanist known for his extensive research and beautifully illustrated publications on ferns. His work remains highly regarded for its scientific accuracy and aesthetic quality. The prints were produced using the chromolithography technique, a popular 19th-century printing method that allowed for vibrant, multi-layered color reproduction. This process adds depth and dimension to the prints, creating lifelike images that make these ferns appear almost tangible. Each print measures approximately 12 x 8 inches, making them perfect for framing. Whether you are a botanical art collector, a nature lover, or someone who appreciates vintage prints, this set offers both historical significance and decorative appeal. Condition Report: Overall good condition with light age-related toning around the edges. The colors remain vibrant, and the images are clear and sharp. Keywords: antique fern prints...
