About the Item
Antique Set of Three Botanical Chromolithographs – Ixiolirion, Tuberose & Aspidistra, 1897
Description:
This beautiful set of three original chromolithographs dates to 1897 and comes from Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse by Edward Step, with plates by Belgian artist B. Herincq. Each plate vividly captures the grace and diversity of flowering plants that were both admired and cultivated in late Victorian gardens.
The first plate, Ixiolirion Montanum (Plate 264), presents an elegant composition of purple-blue mountain lilies, known for their slender, star-shaped blossoms and delicate foliage. These plants, native to Central Asia, were prized for their refined beauty and resilience, making them a desirable addition to glasshouse collections.
The second, Tuberose (Polianthes Tuberosa) (Plate 265), depicts one of the most celebrated flowers of the 19th century, valued for its intoxicating fragrance and association with luxury and refinement. The illustration shows the creamy white blossoms emerging from clustered stems, alongside detailed studies of the bulb and floral parts, offering both aesthetic and scientific appeal.
The third plate, Aspidistra Lurida (Plate 266), known as the “cast iron plant,” highlights the plant’s durability and exotic, ground-level flowers. The chromolithograph features its broad leaves and unique blossoms, beloved during the Victorian period for their resilience in shaded interiors and conservatories.
Together, this set encapsulates the fascination of the Victorian era with botanical diversity, combining scientific precision with artistic refinement. These chromolithographs are not reproductions but authentic 19th-century prints, ideal for collectors of botanical art or as striking decorative pieces when framed.
Condition report: Very good condition with only minor age toning and faint edge wear consistent with age. The colors remain vibrant and fresh. Plate numbers clearly visible. Not sold with frame.
Framing tips: These plates work beautifully as a grouped display. A triple mount with soft cream matting will enhance their botanical detail, while slim wooden or gilt frames lend a period feel. Alternatively, minimalist frames in dark wood or black will highlight the vivid color contrasts of the flowers.
