Antique Handcolored Engraving of Nile and Marsh Crocodiles, c.1800

About the Item

Antique Handcolored Engraving of Crocodiles, Amphibien II, c.1800 This original handcolored copperplate engraving features two distinct crocodile species depicted in naturalistic settings. The illustration is taken from Friedrich Johann Bertuch’s *Bilderbuch für Kinder* (Picture Book for Children), a groundbreaking 12-volume encyclopedia published between 1790 and 1830. Bertuch’s work is celebrated for its detailed illustrations and its role in educating children about the natural world. The engraving showcases the crocodiles with intricate anatomical details, highlighting their textured scales and distinctive postures. The upper crocodile is set against a background featuring a pyramid, suggesting its origin in the Nile region, likely referencing the Nile crocodile (*Crocodylus niloticus*). The lower crocodile’s brighter coloration and robust build could represent a general depiction of another species, emphasizing the diversity of these fascinating reptiles. This rare print is ideal for collectors of antique zoological illustrations or natural history art and serves as a beautiful decorative piece. Condition Report : Good condition.
