About the Item

Antique Lithographs of Grape Hyacinth, Garden Hyacinth & Siberian Squill – 1897 A vibrant set of three antique chromolithographs published in 1897 in Favourite Flowers of Garden and Greenhouse by Edward Step. These fine botanical plates feature beautifully detailed renderings of beloved bulb flowers. The first plate (Pl. 276) presents the Grape Hyacinth (Muscari comosum) in three variations: the standard type, the unusual var. monstrosum, and the delicate var. plumosa, with its intricate feather-like inflorescence. The meticulous rendering captures both the natural structure of the flowers and the distinctive bulbs. The second plate (Pl. 277) depicts the classic Garden Hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis), a staple of European horticulture. Two color variations, one in rich crimson-red and another in pure white, are shown with exquisite attention to detail. The plate highlights the plant’s bulb, flowering stem, and floral anatomy, giving both scientific accuracy and decorative appeal. The third plate (Pl. 278) illustrates the Siberian Squill (Scilla siberica), a charming spring-flowering bulb native to Eurasia. Shown in full bloom with delicate blue star-shaped flowers, the plate also includes a study of the bulb and seed capsule, offering a complete botanical reference. Together, these three plates exemplify late 19th-century chromolithographic printing and the Victorian passion for documenting ornamental garden plants. They are ideal for collectors of botanical art or for elegant display in a home or gallery setting. Condition report: Good condition with vivid colors. Light age toning to the paper consistent with age. Plate marks visible as issued. Suitable for framing. The prints are sold without a frame. Framing tips: These prints look stunning when framed with a soft cream or light ivory mat to highlight the bulbs and flowers, paired with a gilt or dark wood frame to bring out the richness of the lithographic colors. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Edward Step, London, 1897
