This finely detailed 18th-century etching portrays Philip II of Spain (1527–1598), one of the most powerful monarchs of the Spanish Empire during its Golden Age. The portrait was engraved by Jacobus Houbraken (1698–1780), a renowned Dutch engraver known for his masterful portraits of historical figures. The print is dated 1773 and includes a clear inscription beneath the image: “Filips de Tweede, Koning van Spagne,” identifying the sitter.
Philip II, son of Emperor Charles V, ruled over a vast global empire, including Spain, the Spanish Netherlands, and much of the Americas and Asia.
