About the Item

Great Seal of King William III – Rapin’s History of England c.1786 Description: This antique print depicts the Great Seal of King William III, originating from *The History of England* by Mr. Rapin de Thoyras, published circa 1786. The engraving shows both the obverse and reverse of the seal in finely detailed copperplate, hand coloured in regal gold tones. The upper medallion presents William III enthroned beneath an elaborate architectural canopy, crowned and robed, holding the orb and sceptre, symbolising his divine right and royal authority. The lion and unicorn stand at his sides, while cherubs hold the royal arms above, framed by intricate baroque scrollwork. The Latin inscription proclaims William as King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland, and Defender of the Faith. The lower medallion depicts William III in full armour on horseback, crossing a battlefield with his sword drawn in command, representing his military leadership and role in the Glorious Revolution. In the background, a detailed cityscape emphasises his sovereign dominion. Such seals were used to authenticate important state documents, reflecting both administrative authority and the grandeur of monarchy. Technique: Copperplate engraving with later hand colouring. Published in Rapin’s *History of England*, circa 1786, London. Condition summary: Very good antique condition. Sheet with minor age toning and light handling marks at edges, strong clean impression with rich golden hues. Framing tips: For an impressive presentation, mount this historical seal print in a gold leaf or dark wood frame to complement the gilt details, paired with a deep burgundy or navy blue mat to enhance its regal theme. Ideal for classical libraries, heritage interiors, royal collections, and historical education displays.
