Antique print, untitled. Six South American figures: a Spanish woman from Quito, a distinguished native woman, a native barber, an old widow from Quito and a native farmer.
From a Dutch edition of Prevost's 'Histoire Generale des Voyages', published ca. 1770.
Artists and Engravers: Made by 'Noach van der Meer, jr.' after an anonymous artist. Noach van der Meer, jr. (1741-1822).
Condition: Good, given age. Faint soiling in the lower margin. Right edge a little uneven. A thin crease in the top margin (from binding). General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling. Please study scan carefully.

Originates from the 1633 German edition of the Mercator-Hondius Atlas Major, published by Henricus Hondius and Jan Jansson under the title: 'Atlas: das ist Abbildung der gantzen Welt, mit allen darin begriffenen Laendern und Provintzen: sonderlich von Teutschland, Franckreich, Niderland, Ost und West Indien: mit Beschreibung der selben.'
Artists and engravers: Gerard Mercator (1512 - 1594) originally a student of philosophy was one of the most renowned cosmographers and geographers of the 16th century, as well as an accomplished scientific instrument maker. He is most famous for introducing Mercators Projection, a system which allowed navigators to plot the same constant compass bearing on a flat map.
