About the Item

Plate 39: 'Spanje. Nationale Militaire Orde van St. Ferdinand - Orde van Calatrava - Militaire Orde van St. Jacob van Compostella.' (Spain. National Military Order of St. Ferdinand - Order of Calatrava - Order of Santiago). The Royal and Military Order of Saint Ferdinand (Spanish: Real y Militar Orden de San Fernando), commonly known as Laureate Cross of Saint Ferdinand (Spanish: Cruz Laureada de San Fernando), is Spain's highest military award for gallantry. The Order of Calatrava (Spanish: Orden de Calatrava Portuguese: Ordem de Calatrava) was the first military order founded in Castile, but the second to receive papal approval. The papal bull confirming the Order of Calatrava as a Militia was given by Pope Alexander III on September 26, 1164. The Order of Santiago (Galician: Orde de Santiago, Spanish: Orden de Santiago) was founded in the 12th century, and owes its name to the national patron of Galicia and Spain, Santiago (St. James the Greater), under whose banner the Christians of Galicia and Asturias began in the 9th century to combat and drive back the Muslims of the Iberian Peninsula. Condition: Good. This print originates from ‘Geschiedkundige beschrijving der oudere en nieuwere, thans bestaande Ridderorden. - Afbeeldingen der Ridderorden’ by G.L. de Rochemont and J. Bischoff. A rare and expensive work on in 1843 existing cavalier / knight / military orders. Published in Amsterdam, 1843.

Plate 36: 'Sardinie en Savoijen. Orde der Aankondiging van Maria of der annuntiatie - Orde van St. Mauritius en Lazarus - Koninglijke Militaire orde van Savoyen.' (Sardinia and Savoy. Order of the Most Holy Annunciation - Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus - Military Order of Savoy). The Supreme Order of the Most Holy Annunciation (Ordine Supremo della Santissima Annunziata) is an order of chivalry, or knighthood, originating in mediaeval Italy. It eventually was the pinnacle of the honours system in the Kingdom of Italy, which ceased to be a national order when the kingdom became a republic in 1946. Today, the order continues as a dynastic order under the jurisdiction of the Head of the House of Savoy, Victor Emmanuel, Prince of Naples, who is the order's hereditary Sovereign and Grand Master. The Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus is an order of chivalry awarded by the House of Savoy, the heads of which were formerly Kings of Italy. The order was formed by a union in Italy of the original Order of St Lazarus...

It was fictively established by Constantine the Great, though, in reality, it was founded some time between 1520 and 1545 by two brothers belonging to the Angeli Comneni family. The Order of the White Eagle is Poland's highest decoration awarded to both civilians and the military for their merits. It was officially instituted on November 1, 1705 by Augustus II the Strong. The Order of Saint Stanislaus also spelled Stanislas, was an Order in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Kingdom of Poland between 1765 and 1831 and of the Russian Empire from 1831 to 1917.
