Arnold Mesches Signed Chair Series Large Color Lithograph, 1969
About the Item
A very engaging and somewhat scarce work by the Bronx, NY-born controversial American artist Arnold Meches. This piece is one of his from his most recognizable works the chair series that he did in the 1950s/60s and perhaps a bit of a precursor to Andy Warhol's 1967 "Electric Chair" image albeit somewhat less provocative.
Signed and dated (1969) in pencil by the artist in the lower right margin.
Arnold Mesches was born in the Bronx, New York in 1923. His work in the 1940s and 1950s was construed as controversial and provocative by the US government and he was targeted by the FBI as a subversive communist in 1945 (they kept a file on him which he later obtained through the freedom of information act and used the documents to create an art collage series titled "The FBI Files"). For much of his career Meches' art often explored contemporary and historical social issues, much of it informed by world history and his life growing up during the Great Depression.
Meches had over 125 solo exhibitions. His work can be found in numerous collections and museums including:
The Metropolitan Museum of Arts, NY
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art,
The Brooklyn Museum
The Museum of Modern Art in Sydney, Australia
His awards included:
National Endowment of the Arts, 1982
Pollock-Krasner awards, 2002 and 2008
Art Critics of America, 2004
Florida State Individual Grant 2007

Leonor Fini Signed Framed Beautiful Lithograph Print Deux Femmes, circa 1970s
By Leonor Fini
Located in Studio City, CA
A beautiful lithographic print by Argentinian-born Italian surrealist painter, designer, illustrator, and author Leonor Fini titled "Deux Femmes".
Leonor Fini was arguably the most ferociously and heroically independent woman artist of the 20th century. Fini herself never accepted the label of "woman artist," and likewise, never considered herself a Surrealist despite her works having been included in nearly every major Surrealism exhibition from 1936 to the present. In the 1930s she lived in Paris, France where she collaborated with, or who were influenced by such prominent 20th-century artists as Jean Cocteau, Man Ray, Leonora Carrington, Salvador Dalí, Joseph Cornell, Dora Maar, Anna Magnani, Albert Camus, Jean Genet...
