The Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist – Original Dickens Lithograph by Kyd, c.1889
Description:
This evocative character print features the infamous Artful Dodger, one of Charles Dickens’ most memorable creations from Oliver Twist. Captured here in full cocky swagger by illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke, known as "Kyd," this chromolithograph was published circa 1889 as part of the celebrated Raphael Tuck & Sons series portraying iconic Dickens characters.
The Dodger, or Jack Dawkins, is depicted with classic Victorian flair: his checkered waistcoat, striped trousers, red cravat, and slouching top hat all suggest his street-smart personality and youthful bravado. He stands with a self-assured stance, coat thrown open and hands gripping his lapels, with a pipe clenched between his lips as smoke spirals upward—underscoring his precocious criminal charm and defiant independence.
Clarke’s caricatural style masterfully exaggerates the Dodger’s features: a sly expression, pronounced eyebrows, and slightly upturned nose convey a mix of cunning and charisma. The muted sepia and brown tones of his outfit are skillfully offset by the splash of red in his scarf and the warmth of his vest, adding visual dynamism to the composition.
In Dickens’ novel, the Artful Dodger is a young pickpocket and apprentice to Fagin, symbolizing both the resilience and tragedy of children surviving on the fringes of society in industrial London. Kyd’s print balances humor and pathos, making it not just an art piece but a storytelling moment that recalls the hardships and wit of Dickensian London.
This is a fine example of late 19th-century literary illustration, perfect for collectors of Dickensiana or admirers of Victorian visual satire.
Condition report:
