Bartholomeus van der Helst Seated at the Easel – 19th-Century Lithograph This elegant 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts the celebrated Dutch portrait painter Bartholomeus van der Helst seated in his studio, holding a palette and brush. Behind him is a large canvas in progress, showing the beginnings of a group portrait, while the setting includes a richly draped table and ornamental vessel, emphasizing his refined artistic environment. Van der Helst was one of the most important portraitists of the Dutch Golden Age, active in Amsterdam and known for his lifelike representations of wealthy citizens and civic leaders. The lithograph was drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850. The technique used is lithography, hand-colored with soft, subtle tones that bring out the character of the sitter and the texture of his surroundings. The detailing in the clothing and furnishings is carefully rendered, adding depth and historic charm to the composition. The print is in good condition, with strong lines, even coloring, and only minimal signs of aging. The right border (outside the image) is not cut straight.
