About the Item

Bernese Banner Carrier Leading Halberdiers in Swiss Confederation Pageantry This stunning hand-colored lithograph originates from the Fest Album Celebrating Bern’s Entry into the Swiss Confederation on March 6, 1353, a lavish publication commemorating Bern’s 500-year anniversary in 1853. Printed in Bern and Zurich in 1855, the album was produced to honor the historic occasion with a grand festival procession featuring historical figures, cantonal and guild groups, and elaborate heraldic displays. This particular lithograph, created by H. Jenny and lithographed by Kümmerly and Wittmer, presents a striking procession led by the Bernese banner carrier. The image exudes strength and unity, as a group of halberdiers follows behind the standard-bearer, who proudly holds aloft the Bernese flag. The iconic black bear on a red and yellow diagonal field, a symbol of the city of Bern, dominates the flag, representing the strength and resilience of the canton throughout Swiss history. The banner carrier is clad in chainmail and a helmet, his uniform a blend of medieval military attire and decorative pageantry. His breastplate bears the Bernese bear emblem, reinforcing the city’s heraldic identity. Behind him, the halberdiers march in disciplined formation, each wearing a red tunic embroidered with the bear motif. Their matching attire and the powerful presence of the halberds, the characteristic polearms of Swiss infantry, recall the disciplined Swiss troops who played a pivotal role in European military history. The Swiss cantons, particularly Bern, were known for their military prowess in the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance. The halberd, a weapon that combined the effectiveness of an axe, spear, and hook, was widely used by Swiss mercenaries who were feared across Europe. The lithograph captures the dignity and martial strength of Bern’s defenders, commemorating their role in securing the region’s independence and sovereignty. The artwork showcases meticulous detailing in the soldiers' uniforms, weapons, and facial expressions, all rendered with the precision characteristic of high-quality 19th-century lithographic printing. The rich red and yellow hues of the Bernese colors remain vibrant, emphasizing the ceremonial grandeur of the procession. Condition: The print is in very good condition, with some minor signs of age, such as occasional light foxing around the edges. The colors remain well-preserved, and the details are crisp and clear. Framing Tips: This lithograph would be best displayed in a deep wood frame, preferably in a dark mahogany or ebony finish to complement the historical character of the piece. A museum-grade mat in cream or off-white will accentuate the vivid colors while protecting the paper. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the integrity of the hand-coloring and fine lithographic details. This remarkable piece is a testament to Bern’s historical and martial legacy, making it an excellent addition to any collection of Swiss history, heraldry, or military prints.
