About the Item

Caspar van Baerle in a Garden Setting – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This charming 19th-century hand-colored lithograph depicts Caspar van Baerle (1584–1648), a noted Dutch scholar, poet, and historian of the Dutch Golden Age. A close associate of prominent humanists such as Hugo Grotius and Constantijn Huygens, Van Baerle was a professor at Leiden University and a prolific writer, contributing to the literary and intellectual life of the Dutch Republic. In this tranquil scene, Van Baerle is seated in a garden with a letter or manuscript in hand, suggesting a moment of peaceful contemplation or study. A soft vine climbs the brick wall behind him, and two women converse in the distance, reinforcing the domestic, cultivated atmosphere. His relaxed posture and pleasant expression suggest the harmony of intellect and leisure, qualities highly esteemed in the 17th-century scholarly ideal. The lithograph was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850. Executed in lithographic technique and tastefully hand-colored, this print captures the spirit of Golden Age erudition and refinement. The print is in very good condition, with rich tone and clean surfaces, making it highly suitable for framing. Framing suggestion: Pair with a walnut or mahogany frame and ivory archival matting to complement the earthy tones and historical setting. UV-protective glass is recommended to preserve the hand coloring. Jacob Cats – Dutch Poet and Statesman, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph
Located in Langweer, NL
Jacob Cats – Dutch Poet and Statesman, 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph Item Description: This 19th-century hand-colored lithograph portrays Jacob Cats, one of the most beloved poets and moralists of the Dutch Golden Age. Born in 1577, Cats served as a jurist, politician, and Grand Pensionary of Holland, but he is best remembered for his richly illustrated emblem books and rhymed moral teachings that were household staples in the Netherlands for centuries. His work influenced generations of Dutch families and writers alike. Cats is depicted seated at his writing desk, pen in hand, with books and manuscripts surrounding him. His composed yet thoughtful expression, modest attire, and scholarly setting all reflect the dual life he led as both a literary figure and a statesman. The background features shelves of books, a richly patterned tablecloth, and finely detailed textures that emphasize his intellectual world. This lithograph was drawn by W F Hoevenaar and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht. It demonstrates the refined character and quiet dignity often associated with Cats' legacy, rendered with subtle, hand-applied color and careful linework.
