Charming Kitten Etching by Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt – Estate Edition 1977

About the Item

Charming Kitten Etching by Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt – Estate Edition 1977 This captivating etching of a playful kitten is a delightful work by German artist Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt (1895–1977). Meyer-Eberhardt was renowned for his masterful animal portraits and spent his life capturing the charm and character of the creatures he loved. Born in Leipzig, he trained under Theodor Hagen and Lionel Feininger at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts. In 1918, he settled in Munich, dedicating himself solely to animal studies—an artistic choice that cemented his legacy as a leading animal portraitist. This print is from the estate edition, indicated by the “Nachlass Meyer-Eberhardt” signature at the bottom right. It was printed in 1977, following the artist’s death, from the original copperplate, likely dating from the 1920s–1950s. Published by the renowned Hanfstaengl Publishing Company in Munich, the etching reflects the same commitment to quality as in the artist’s lifetime. It was printed by hand on 300lb acid-free handmade paper, using the same traditional techniques described by the artist himself. The composition is particularly charming: the young kitten is captured mid-pounce, fascinated by a small bug, embodying a sense of curiosity and youthful energy that draws the viewer in. Meyer-Eberhardt’s precise etching technique beautifully conveys the softness of the kitten’s fur and the folds of the blanket. The gentle lines and expert shading create a serene and heartwarming scene—perfect for animal lovers and collectors of fine etchings alike. Condition report: Very good condition with faint toning at the sheet edges and minor signs of age typical of vintage etchings. The paper remains bright and crisp, and the print retains its full detail. Framing tips: This etching pairs beautifully with a simple natural wood or black frame to complement the warmth and detail. A white or cream mat will enhance the delicate linework and highlight the charming subject.
