Color Lithograph of the ""La Danse" by Marc Chagall, 1951
"unframed and unsigned"
"Marc Chagall’s dreamlike compositions depict aspects of the artist’s personal and family histories, and those of Eastern European folklore at large. Flying figures, elements of Jewish tradition, peasant life, and animals are frequent motifs. Chagall’s practice—which spanned painting, printmaking, books, ceramics, and stained glass—was immensely influential in the development of 20th-century art: His supernatural subjects and emotional gestures bridged the work of earlier avant-garde movements such as Cubism, Fauvism, and Symbolism with later modernist styles such as Surrealism. Chagall’s career was disrupted by the World Wars, and while the artist moved between Russia, France, and the United States, he managed to exhibit widely during his lifetime both within the continent and in the U.S. His work belongs in the collections of the National Gallery of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Tate, the Guggenheim Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Chagall also produced stained-glass windows for Hadassah University Medical Center’s Abbell Synagogue in Jerusalem, the Saint-Étienne Cathedral in Metz, the United Nations building in New York City, and the St. Stephen church in Mainz, Germany."

Marc Chagall was a renowned Jewish artist born July 7, 1887, in Vitebsk, Russia, who later moved to Paris and gained French citizenship. Chagall studied at the Imperial Society for the Protection of the Arts in Saint Petersburg. He was a member of the Ecole de Paris and was part of the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne in the early 1900s. In addition to Paris and St. Petersburg, Chagall traveled and exhibited globally including Amsterdam, Jerusalem, and New York City. Having lived through World War I and World War II, his work was influenced by these events. Chagall’s work is inspired by his Jewish heritage and his hometown of Vitebsk and incorporates elements of Fauvism and Cubism as well as aspects of traditional Russian and Jewish folk art. His work has been exhibited and collected internationally both privately and by institutions including the Guggenheim, the Museum of Modern Art, Centre Pompidou, and Tate Modern.

"Johnny Gotthard Friedlaender (1912-1992), printmaker and painter, was born in Pless, Prussian Silesia (Germany) on June 21, 1912, the son of a pharmacist. He moved to Breslau in 1921 and, in 1928, he enrolled at the Breslau Art Academy where he attended master classes taught by Otto Mueller, a member of Die Brücke. During his academy years Friedlaender worked in lithography and etching.
In 1930, he moved to Dresden, where his work was included in group exhibitions at Galerie J. Sandel and, in 1936, he traveled to Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Austria, France, and Belgium. Friedlaender and his young wife fled the Nazi regime in 1937 settling in Paris as political refugees. In 1938 and 1939, Friedlaender worked at the literary weekly magazine Marianne on Paul Chadourne's recommendation. From 1939 to 1943 he was interned in a series of concentration camps. After the war, the Friedlaenders returned to Paris in 1945, in 1947 he became a member of the Salon de Mai, and in 1950 he became a French citizen.
"Friedlaender worked for various journals and focused on etching as his main medium of expression. He became one of the great innovators in color printmaking and a school formed in Paris around his work as a painter and printmaker. From his Paris atelier Friedlaender instructed younger artists who themselves went on to become noteworthy, among them Arthur Luiz Piza, Brigitte Coudrain...
