About the Item

Egyptian Ornament Motifs – Lotus Columns & Symbolic Designs, Plate II Description: This brilliantly colored decorative plate titled "ÉGYPTIEN" (Egyptian), Plate II, presents a detailed collection of ancient Egyptian ornamental motifs, masterfully reproduced in chromolithography during the 19th century. This sheet captures the geometric clarity, botanical richness, and symbolic power of pharaonic design, as understood through archaeological discoveries and artistic interpretation in the period of Egyptomania. Dominating the lower half of the composition are stylized floral and botanical designs based on lotus and papyrus plants—sacred flora of the Nile Valley and key symbols in ancient Egyptian art and religion. Central among them is an ornate bouquet of papyrus and lotus in full bloom, flanked by palm-shaped columns and decorative stems, recalling temple reliefs and monumental architecture along the Nile. Above, the plate features friezes, symbolic patterns, and color-rich tile designs. These include a winged solar disc flanked by uraei at the top, a motif often found above temple entrances representing divine protection. Symmetrical panels to the left and right incorporate spiraling scrolls, rosettes, checker patterns, and repeating fan shapes. Several elements also include representations of sacred vessels, ankhs, scarabs, and composite deities or symbols, all rendered in saturated primary tones—reds, blues, yellows, and greens—true to ancient color conventions found in tombs and temple wall paintings. This lithograph was drawn and lithographed by Pralon and printed by the renowned firm Firmin-Didot Frères in Paris. It likely originates from *L'Ornement Polychrome* by Auguste Racinet or a similar 19th-century decorative arts reference book, created for artists, architects, and designers during the European revival of classical and non-Western styles. This edition pays homage to the legacy of ancient Egyptian design, which was considered not only aesthetically profound but also laden with spiritual meaning and cosmic symbolism. A perfect piece for those interested in the history of design, Egyptology, or symbolic decorative arts, this print bridges archaeology and artistic imagination with remarkable fidelity. Condition report: Excellent condition. Bright and unfaded colors, clean paper, and only minor age toning to the outer edges. No tears or foxing visible. Lithograph surface well preserved. Framing tips: Ideal in a clean black or gold frame to emphasize the saturated colors and classical aesthetic. A mat in ivory or sandstone will complement the tones while referencing the hues of ancient Egyptian walls and parchment. Technique: Chromolithograph Maker: Lith. par Pralon; printed by Firmin-Didot Frères & Cie, Paris, circa 1880s
