Engraving of a Knight of the Order of St. Stephen in Tuscany, 1791

About the Item

Engraving of a Knight of the Order of St. Stephen in Tuscany, 1792 Description: This captivating hand-colored engraving depicts a Knight of the Order of St. Stephen, an esteemed Catholic chivalric order established in Tuscany during the 16th century. The knight is portrayed in his ceremonial attire, a long white robe accented with vibrant pink sashes and a prominent red cross emblem symbolizing the order's religious devotion and military heritage. The elaborate detail in the illustration showcases the opulence and significance of this Tuscan order, emphasizing its role in protecting Christianity during the Renaissance. This engraving is part of the 1791 publication "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben" (Illustrations of the Knightly Orders with Unique Attire). This monumental work by Christian Friedrich Schwan documented spiritual and secular orders and provided historical context on their origins and missions. Originally published as a series of booklets between 1779 and 1791, it remains a vital resource for understanding the heraldic and ceremonial traditions of these distinguished orders. The engraving captures the essence of the era with its refined artistry, reflecting the grandeur of the Order of St. Stephen. It would make a perfect addition to collections focusing on heraldry, ecclesiastical history, or 18th-century European art. Condition Report: Good condition with slight age-toning along the edges and minor foxing consistent with its age. Vibrant hand-coloring remains intact. The paper is sturdy with one small tear in the border not other significant damage. Framing Tip: This piece would shine in a classic gold-accented wooden frame with a neutral or off-white mat. This framing choice would enhance the historical significance and artistic detail of the engraving, making it a sophisticated display piece for any setting.

Hand-Colored Engraving of the Ceiling of the Church of Santa Costanza in Frame
Located in Pembroke, MA
A large, nicely-framed Italian hand-colored engraving in tones of terracotta and black (17th century, with more recent matte and frame) by Pietro Bartoli. The engraving depicts the mosaic ceiling in the church of Santa Costanza outside of Rome, which was studied by the ecclesiatical archaeologist Giovanni Ciampini. The mosaic ceiling no longer exists, but is known through various depictions of the artwork, such as this engraving. The images include Christian imagery including the sacrifice of Cain and Abel and possibly Noah building the ark. The upper row of mosaics is believed to represent scenes from the New Testament, with caryatids dividing the ceiling into twelve segments. The engraving is captioned in Latin: "Opus Musiuum olim in tholo Templi, quod vulgo creditur Bacchi, nunc Sancte Constantie extra Portam Piam cariatides, et Telamones in duodecium dividant Segmenta, ubi plura autumnales ferias, et piscationis Genium demostrant, iuxta interpretionem Ciampini qui mediatatem exhibet Veterum monum." In the 17th century, the church of Santa Costanza was known as the "Temple of Bacchus," and was the site of rowdy Bacchic festivals until Pope Clement XI banned the rites in 1720. Pietro Santo...
