About the Item

French and Italian Renaissance Ornament Prints by H. Dolmetsch, c. 1880, Set of 4 This exquisite set of four antique prints presents an impressive array of decorative designs from the French and Italian Renaissance, originally compiled and published in the late 19th century by Hermann Dolmetsch. These chromolithographs come from the renowned series Ornamentenschatz, issued by Verlag von Jul. Hoffmann in Stuttgart, and they exemplify the rich artistic traditions and ornamental vocabulary that flourished in Renaissance Europe. Each print is a meticulously executed plate capturing different aspects of applied and decorative arts. Plate 58, titled Edelmetallarbeiten mit Email, showcases enamel and precious metalwork designs, including elaborate vessels, jewelry, and fantastical figures, echoing the intricate craftsmanship of Renaissance goldsmiths. Plate 59, Typographische Verzierungen, is a masterclass in ornamental typography and border design, presenting stylized letters and frames that reflect the influence of humanist calligraphy and architectural decoration. Plate 60, Modeldruckerei und Stickerei, focuses on textile printing and embroidery, presenting ornamental textile patterns in a rich golden tone, detailed with scrolling foliage, arabesques, and stylized floral motifs. Plate 61, Teppich-Malerei, offers colorful decorative carpet designs, incorporating symmetry, interlace, and floral motifs with Moorish and Gothic influences. Each sheet is marked by an extraordinary attention to detail and historic accuracy. Hermann Dolmetsch was a German architect, historian, and ornamentist whose work was instrumental in preserving the knowledge and aesthetic principles of historical design. His plates draw from authentic architectural elements, museum pieces, and surviving decorative schemes, making them valuable both as works of art and as documentary records of design history. Ornamentenschatz was widely influential among designers, artists, and craftsmen of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, especially during the rise of the historicist and Art Nouveau movements. Condition Summary: These prints are in very good condition considering their age. The colors remain vivid and the paper shows only light age-toning and occasional faint spotting in the margins, typical for chromolithographs of this period. There are no tears, folds, or restoration marks. The impressions are sharp and the registration of the multiple layers of color is precise, testifying to the high quality of the original printing process. Framing Tips: For display, these prints benefit from being individually framed with a generous off-white or ivory archival mat that allows the detailed ornamentation to stand out. A classic gold or wood frame works beautifully to echo the Renaissance themes, though a minimalist black frame can create a striking contrast in modern interiors. Due to their uniform size and complementary themes, these prints also lend themselves well to being hung in a horizontal row, making a strong visual statement in any interior. Use UV-protective glass or acrylic to preserve the vibrancy of the chromolithography.
