About the Item

Grand Cross of the St. Stephen's Order: Magnificent 18th-Century Engraving This magnificent hand-colored engraving showcases a "Großkreuz des St. Stephans Orden" (Grand Cross of the Order of St. Stephen), an order founded in 1764 by Maria Theresa of Austria. The figure depicted is dressed in a lavish ceremonial robe of rich red and green, intricately decorated with golden acanthus leaves. The regal garment is further accentuated with ermine trims and a ceremonial white headdress adorned with a feather, reflecting the grandeur of the Order. At the bottom, the symbolic insignia of the Order is beautifully illustrated, including the distinctive cross of St. Stephen framed by a golden chain and crowned emblems, representing the honor bestowed upon the knights of the Grand Cross. This piece originates from Christian Friedrich Schwan's celebrated series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben," created between 1779 and 1791 in Mannheim. This engraving serves as a testament to the rich traditions of chivalric orders in 18th-century Europe and the ceremonial grandeur associated with them. Condition: Excellent condition with bright, vivid colors and finely preserved details. Minor age-related toning and light edge wear consistent with the engraving's age do not detract from its visual appeal. Frame Tip: A gold-leaf or antique-style frame with a red or green accent mat will elegantly highlight the intricate detailing and colors, creating a regal presentation suitable for historical or formal interiors. A perfect addition to a collection of chivalric or Austrian history memorabilia, this engraving is not only a fine artwork but also a valuable cultural artifact, reflecting the splendor and heritage of the St. Stephen's Order.
