About the Item
Ground Plan of the Pyramids of Giza near Cairo – Ancient Egypt, c.1710
Description:
This remarkable early 18th-century engraving depicts the *Grondteekening der Pyramiden van Giza, naby Kairo* – a Dutch-labelled architectural plan of the famous pyramid complex near Cairo. The print offers a bird’s-eye layout of the Giza Plateau, home to the Great Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops), the Pyramid of Khafre, and the Pyramid of Menkaure, along with surrounding tombs, causeways, and temples.
At the center is the colossal square footprint of the Great Pyramid, labelled “D,” with neatly etched masonry lines. Adjacent smaller pyramids, chapels, and fields of mastaba tombs surround the main structures. Several cross-sections and elevation diagrams are inset on the left, labeled “C,” “F,” and “G,” showing internal passages such as the Grand Gallery and burial chambers within the pyramids—early European interpretations based on limited access at the time.
The map includes measurements in cubits and features additional annotations such as “De Platte Grond en Doorsnede der Galerij in de Groote Pyramide,” referencing the gallery in the Great Pyramid. The layout is carefully arranged to include both architectural fidelity and illustrative embellishment, such as the desert terrain and compass rose.
This engraving originates from the 1710 travel publication by Cornelis de Bruijn, a Dutch explorer, artist, and travel writer who visited Egypt in the early 1700s and published one of the earliest illustrated travel accounts of the Near East. His engravings predate scientific Egyptology and are valued for their pioneering documentation of ancient sites from a European perspective.
