About the Item

Haddock and Atlantic Cod - Majestic Scandinavian Fish Lithograph This exquisite 19th-century lithograph from *Skandinaviens Fiskar* features two of the most iconic and economically significant fish species from Scandinavian waters: the Haddock (Gadus aeglefinus) and the Atlantic Cod (Gadus callarias). Illustrated with impeccable attention to detail by Wilhelm von Wright, this print exemplifies the mastery of natural history illustration, combining scientific precision with artistic elegance. Published by P. A. Norstedt & Söners Förlag in Stockholm, this lithograph remains a valuable piece for both collectors and naturalists. At the top of the plate, the Haddock (Gadus aeglefinus) is portrayed with its characteristic dark lateral line and distinctive black blotch above the pectoral fin, commonly referred to as the "Devil's thumbprint." The sleek, silvery body with soft, muted shading reflects the subtle, natural coloration of this popular fish. The elongated form and pointed head emphasize its agile and streamlined nature, making it an ideal predator in cold northern waters. Haddock are highly valued for their mild, white flesh and are widely sought after in commercial fishing. In the center of the composition lies the Atlantic Cod (Gadus callarias), rendered with lifelike realism, highlighting its robust, muscular body and smooth, olive-gray scales speckled with darker spots. The slightly arched lateral line and the distinctive chin barbel add to its easily recognizable profile. Cod are prized for their firm, flaky meat and are fundamental to the fishing industry in Scandinavian and North Atlantic waters. At the bottom of the print, a second variation of the Atlantic Cod is shown with a warmer, more golden-brown coloration and pronounced dorsal fins. The naturalistic hand coloring and precise line work create a visually striking and scientifically accurate representation. The intricate patterning on the body and the distinctive whisker-like barbel under the chin are clearly depicted, reflecting Wright’s dedication to anatomical precision and natural beauty. The lithographic technique used in this print masterfully blends fine line drawing with vibrant hand coloring, resulting in a lifelike and aesthetically captivating representation. Each fish is depicted with detailed attention to texture, anatomy, and coloration, making this lithograph a valuable record of Scandinavian marine biodiversity. Condition: The print is preserved in excellent condition, with vivid colors and crisp details that have remained remarkably intact over the years. Framing tips: To best display its artistic and scientific qualities, consider framing it with a classic, dark wood frame and a neutral or cream mat to highlight the rich, earthy tones of the fish. This lithograph would make an exceptional addition to any natural history collection or maritime-themed interior, celebrating the enduring heritage of Scandinavian fishing culture.
