Hand-Colored Optical View of Pont Notre-Dame, Paris, ca. 18th Century

About the Item

Title: Hand-Colored Optical View of Pont Notre-Dame, Paris, ca. 18th Century This hand-colored optical print depicts a bustling view of Pont Notre-Dame over the Seine River in Paris, created anonymously between 1700 and 1799. The scene shows boats laden with goods, as merchants and townsfolk move about the riverbank, illustrating the lively commerce along the Seine. The bridge itself is depicted with its densely packed buildings, showcasing a vibrant cross-section of Parisian life in the 18th century. The print, titled "Vuë du Pont Notre Dame a Paris" in both Latin and French, was designed for use with optical devices like the Zograscope to create an illusion of depth. The linear perspective, coupled with the vivid hand coloring, brings the scene to life and was typical of these "vue d’optique" prints that were popular during the 18th century, offering glimpses of urban and foreign landmarks. Etched and engraved using a burin on laid paper, the print exhibits careful craftsmanship and attention to detail. Its intricate depiction of boats, buildings, and people adds both charm and historical interest to the view of one of Paris’s most famous bridges. Condition report: Minor edge wear, some foxing, light toning throughout. Overall, a well-preserved, charming impression with age-appropriate wear.
