"Horses in the Sun, " Remarkable Woodblock Print by Charles Kassler, Art Deco
About the Item
This rare, perhaps unique, woodblock print by Charles Kassler positively radiates Art Deco energy -- both from the sun at the upper left corner, and from the pair of black horses, whose manes are electrically alive, and whose bodies are confidently thrust forward. Kassler is best known as a WPA muralist, applying his knowledge of fresco painting, gained in Italy, to two great projects in California -- the "The Bison Hunt" for the Central Library in Downtown Los Angeles, later destroyed, and "Pastoral California" at Plummer Auditorium in Fullerton, in Orange County. The latter was painted over, but was recently rediscovered and restored. This print is dated and signed, but also exhibits a special dedication to Arthur Fischer, a dear friend of Kassler's. (Visible portion of print is 8" high by 9.5" wide.)

By Lynd Ward

Famed for his woodcut book illustrations in the Art Deco era, Lynd Ward produced a series of dramatic images that reminded the reader of film noirs of the era, with spotlit figures in dark settings that seemed to presage flight, fear, hope and death. Unsigned plates from the books he illustrated are not uncommon, but signed prints such as this are rare. This image was an illustration for "Wild Pilgrimage" by Ward, published by Harrison Smith...
