Hospitaller Nun in Post-Rhodes Attire: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving

About the Item

Hospitaller Nun in Post-Rhodes Attire: 1791 Hand-Colored Engraving This elegant hand-colored engraving, titled "Ehemalige Kleidung der Johanniterinnen nach Eroberung der Insel Rhodos" (Former Clothing of the Hospitaller Nuns After the Conquest of Rhodes), portrays a nun of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem in her ceremonial attire from the post-Rhodes period. She is dressed in a black habit adorned with the iconic white Maltese cross, symbolizing her religious commitment and service within the Order. Her serene stance, hands clasped together, and understated expression convey a sense of humility and devotion. This engraving is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan's esteemed series, "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden," or "Illustrations of all spiritual and secular orders," published between 1779 and 1791 in Mannheim. Schwan's series documents the unique ceremonial and historical attire of European knightly and religious orders with remarkable precision and artistry. The depiction of this Hospitaller nun reflects the Order's transition after their relocation from Rhodes and emphasizes the enduring legacy of their religious mission. The delicate hand-coloring brings out the subtle contrast between the nun's black robe and white coif, offering a glimpse into the historical attire and traditions of one of history's most storied Orders. This engraving is an excellent choice for collectors of religious art, historical prints, or artifacts from the Hospitaller Order. Condition Report Minor foxing and light age-related toning along the edges, typical of its age. The hand-coloring is well-preserved with vivid contrasts. Minimal handling marks, but overall in good condition. Framing Tip: Enhance the engraving's historical significance with a black or charcoal acid-free mat and a silver or gold frame for a refined look. UV-resistant glass is recommended to protect the vibrant hand-coloring and ensure preservation. This piece would make a serene and sophisticated focal point in any collection or display.
