About the Item

Jacob’s Bridge – Antique Aquatint View of Syria & the Holy Land by Spilsbury, 1803 This striking hand-colored aquatint titled Jacob’s Bridge offers a dramatic view of the landscape between the Holy Land and Syria, rich with both natural beauty and historical resonance. The scene is dominated by a multi-arched stone bridge, known traditionally as Jacob’s Bridge, spanning a broad river beneath a backdrop of lush hills and distant mountain peaks. Sketched from life by F.B. Spilsbury, a naval surgeon and artist, this view was part of his visual documentation of the Mediterranean and the Levant during his travels in the early 19th century. His works were later engraved and published in London in 1803, offering one of the few colored printed visual accounts of the region during that period. In the foreground, several figures—travelers or locals—engage in conversation or observe the scene, adding life and scale to the composition. The distant villages dotting the hills and the dramatic interplay of light and shadow create a romantic and slightly mysterious atmosphere, emphasizing the region’s timelessness and biblical associations. Jacob’s Bridge, often associated with biblical Jacob’s journey, stands as a symbolic crossing between worlds—geographically, spiritually, and historically. Whether viewed as a landmark, an artistic subject, or a moment in travel history, this aquatint resonates with collectors and admirers of early Holy Land views. Condition report: Excellent original condition with rich, well-preserved hand-coloring. Minimal edge toning and some tears along the outer edge of the paper, but no repairs. Plate marks clearly defined and stable paper. Framing tips: A warm-toned wooden frame (such as rosewood or walnut) with a soft cream or parchment-colored mat will enhance both the earthy foreground and the soft skies. A gold inner edge can lend a touch of formality to the display.
