Jan Janszoon Starter at His Desk – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph

About the Item

Jan Janszoon Starter at His Desk – 19th-Century Hand-Colored Lithograph This finely rendered 19th-century hand-colored lithograph features Jan Janszoon Starter, a Dutch poet of the early seventeenth century known for his lyrical and romantic works. Born in Amsterdam in 1593, Starter gained popularity as a youthful literary voice and was admired for his love poetry and emotional depth. Though he died young at the age of 26, his verse was widely read and published, influencing later generations of Dutch poets. The scene captures Starter in a contemplative pose at his writing desk, surrounded by books, papers, and a lute resting against his chair—an allusion to the musicality and emotional tone of his poetry. An inkpot and quill lie in the foreground, and a sketched portrait above the desk hints at the introspective nature of his work. The overall composition evokes the image of a sensitive, inspired writer lost in thought. Drawn by Herman ten Kate and printed by P W van de Weijer in Utrecht around 1850, this lithograph is executed with fine detail and softly hand-colored tones. The print preserves the romantic spirit of Starter’s literary legacy and is an ideal decorative piece for lovers of poetry, music, and Dutch Golden Age culture. The condition is good, with subtle coloring and sharp lines, and only minimal age toning around the edges. Framing suggestion: A gold-leaf or dark walnut frame with soft archival matting in warm ivory or parchment will enhance the literary theme. Use UV-protective glass to preserve the delicately applied coloring and protect from fading.
