Born in Amsterdam in 1593, Starter gained popularity as a youthful literary voice and was admired for his love poetry and emotional depth. Though he died young at the age of 26, his verse was widely read and published, influencing later generations of Dutch poets. The scene captures Starter in a contemplative pose at his writing desk, surrounded by books, papers, and a lute resting against his chair—an allusion to the musicality and emotional tone of his poetry.
