Japanese Textile Patterns in Rich Colors: Antique Lithograph, 1880s

About the Item

Title: Japanese Textile Patterns in Rich Colors: Antique Lithograph, 1880s This remarkable lithograph from the 1880s features two vibrant examples of traditional Japanese textile patterns, offering a rich visual exploration of the artistic motifs and color palettes that defined Japanese design during the Meiji era. Published by Sampson Low & Co. and printed in Paris by the renowned Imp. Lemercier & Cie, this piece was directed by G. A. Audsley, whose lifelong fascination with Japanese art shines through in the careful arrangement of these designs. On the left, an intricate patchwork of stylized floral and geometric motifs in shades of earthy brown, jade green, and vivid red conveys the layered, dynamic beauty typical of traditional Japanese kimono fabrics. Each square reveals a miniature world of swirling clouds, delicate blossoms, and flowing lines, reflecting the natural harmony and refined craftsmanship of Japanese textile art. On the right, a more fluid and dynamic composition features repeating fans and stylized cranes in flight against a deep, black backdrop. The fans are richly decorated with intricate scenes of fish, flowers, and flowing water, all executed with a masterful use of color and pattern that speaks to the sophistication of Meiji-era textile design. The golden outlines and deep green and red accents add a layer of opulence to this already captivating piece. This lithograph exemplifies the Japonisme movement that swept Europe in the late 19th century, offering a glimpse into the cultural exchange that shaped Western appreciation of Japanese art. It is a wonderful addition to any collection of Japanese art, antique prints, or for anyone drawn to the subtle elegance and historical richness of traditional Japanese design. Condition report: Very good to excellent condition for its age, with minor foxing and some age-related spots in the margins.
