The John James Audubon double elephant folio chromolithograph Plate 389 No. 6-4 Crested Grebe from Birds of America. Podiceps Cristatus. Adult male spring plumage 1. Drawn from nature by J.J. Audubon, F.R.S. F.L.S. Chromolithograph by J. Bien, New York 1860. Some time after Audubon's death, his sons entered into a partnership with Julius Bien to transfer the original Havell images from copper plates to lithographic stones. Many elaborate steps followed and in 1858 production began. Sadly, the Civil war stopped the project. Provenance: Goodspeed's Boston Massachusetts, 1985. Framed dimensions: H. 33.5" W. 41"
