Kitten Playing with a Marble – Etching by Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt, 1977 Estate

About the Item

Kitten Playing with a Marble – Etching by Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt, 1977 Estate This charming etching depicts a playful kitten, rendered in exquisite detail by the talented German animal artist Kurt Meyer-Eberhardt (1895–1977). Known for his exceptional skill in capturing the personality and essence of animals, Meyer-Eberhardt devoted his career to animal portraiture. Born in Leipzig, he trained under Theodor Hagen and Lionel Feininger at the Weimar Academy of Fine Arts. In 1918, he chose to move to Munich, where he dedicated himself exclusively to animal studies, becoming one of the finest animal etchers of the 20th century. This etching comes from the estate of the artist, indicated by the “Nachlass Meyer-Eberhardt” signature at the bottom right. Printed in 1977 after the artist’s death, it was created from the original copperplate, likely from the 1920s–1950s, and printed by the renowned Hanfstaengl Publishing Company in Munich. Their workshop has a long history of producing museum-quality etchings, and this piece upholds that tradition with fine detail and rich tonal variation. The subject is an adorable young kitten curiously playing with a small marble, its tiny paw outstretched and its gaze focused in delightful concentration. The gentle textures of the fur, the soft background, and the light and shadow create a captivating scene that highlights the innocence and playfulness of the animal world. This etching is a wonderful choice for cat lovers, collectors of animal art, and those seeking to add a touch of whimsy and charm to their interiors. Condition report: Very good vintage condition. The sheet has minimal signs of handling and faint toning around the edges. The image area is pristine with full tonal range and crisp details, typical for Meyer-Eberhardt’s estate prints. Framing tips: Pair this etching with a simple wood frame in natural, black, or white for a classic look. A white or cream mat will highlight the charming scene and draw the eye to the kitten’s delightful playfulness.
