Knight of the Order of Dannebrog: 18th-Century Danish Chivalric Elegance

About the Item

Knight of the Order of Dannebrog: 18th-Century Danish Chivalric Elegance This distinguished hand-colored engraving depicts a "Ritter vom Danebrogs-Orden in Dänemark" (Knight of the Order of Dannebrog), one of Denmark’s oldest and most respected chivalric orders. The knight is shown in an opulent ceremonial outfit featuring a white and gold doublet, striped trousers, and a striking scarlet cloak draped elegantly over his shoulders. A ceremonial sword and the order's insignia—prominently displayed around his neck—underscore his esteemed rank and the order's prestige. This artwork is part of the monumental series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben," published between 1779 and 1791 by Christian Friedrich Schwan in Mannheim. The series documents the ceremonial attire of Europe’s noble orders with exquisite detail and historical accuracy. The Order of Dannebrog, re-instituted in 1671 by King Christian V, celebrates loyalty and service to the Danish crown, making this engraving a rare and valuable depiction of Danish history and heritage. Condition: The engraving is in excellent condition for its age, with vibrant hand-coloring and minimal age-related toning. Slight corner wear and faint marks along the edges, consistent with its vintage, do not detract from its overall beauty. Frame Tip: A deep mahogany or gold frame would complement the warm tones of the scarlet cloak and golden details. Pair it with a cream or light gray mat to enhance its presentation and emphasize the intricate craftsmanship. This piece is an exceptional addition to any collection of historical engravings, Scandinavian memorabilia, or chivalric art. Its rarity, historical context, and superb artistic detail make it a standout for both display and scholarly interest.

Antique 18th Century Map of the Province of Pensilvania 'Pennsylvania State'
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine antique of the colony of Pennsylvania. Noted at the top of the sheet as a 'Map of the province of Pensilvania'. This undated and anonymous map is thought to be from the Gentleman's Magazine, London, circa 1775, although the general appearance could date it to the 1760's. The southern boundary reflects the Mason-Dixon survey (1768), the western boundary is placed just west of Pittsburgh, and the northern boundary is not marked. The map has a number of reference points that likely refer to companion text and appear to be connected to boundaries. The western and southern boundaries are marked Q, R, S, for example. A diagonal line runs from the Susquehanna R to the Lake Erie P. A broken line marked by many letters A, B, N, O, etc., appears in the east. There are no latitude or longitude markings, blank verso. Framed in a shaped contemporary gilt wooden frame and matted under a cream colored matte. Bearing an old Graham Arader Gallery...
