Knight of the Order of the Elephant: 18th-Century Danish Chivalric Elegance

About the Item

Knight of the Order of the Elephant: 18th-Century Danish Chivalric Elegance This captivating hand-colored engraving illustrates a "Ritter Elephanten-Orden des weißen in Dänemark" (Knight of the Order of the Elephant), Denmark’s most prestigious chivalric order. The knight is adorned in a magnificently detailed ceremonial cloak featuring elaborate silver embroidery and a striking crimson sash. The ensemble is completed with a plumed hat and the iconic elephant insignia suspended from a gold chain, symbolizing strength and loyalty. This artwork is part of Christian Friedrich Schwan’s monumental series "Abbildungen derjenigen Ritter-Orden welche eine eigene Ordenskleidung haben," published from 1779 to 1791 in Mannheim. The series meticulously documents the ceremonial attire of Europe’s most illustrious orders, providing a window into the grandeur and symbolism of 18th-century chivalric traditions. The Order of the Elephant, founded in the 15th century, was historically reserved for royalty and the highest-ranking nobles, making this depiction a rare and significant piece of Danish heraldic history. Condition: Very good condition for its age. The hand-coloring remains vibrant with minor toning and faint edge wear. A faint mark in the lower area, typical for its vintage, does not detract from its overall presentation. Frame Tip: A gold or silver frame would beautifully echo the opulent embroidery and elephant insignia. Pair it with a white or light gray mat to emphasize the regal details and create a sophisticated display. This engraving is a must-have for collectors of Scandinavian history, royal memorabilia, or chivalric art. Its exquisite craftsmanship and connection to one of Europe’s oldest orders make it a true standout for display or as part of a prestigious collection.

Antique 18th Century Map of the Province of Pensilvania 'Pennsylvania State'
Located in Philadelphia, PA
A fine antique of the colony of Pennsylvania. Noted at the top of the sheet as a 'Map of the province of Pensilvania'. This undated and anonymous map is thought to be from the Gentleman's Magazine, London, circa 1775, although the general appearance could date it to the 1760's. The southern boundary reflects the Mason-Dixon survey (1768), the western boundary is placed just west of Pittsburgh, and the northern boundary is not marked. The map has a number of reference points that likely refer to companion text and appear to be connected to boundaries. The western and southern boundaries are marked Q, R, S, for example. A diagonal line runs from the Susquehanna R to the Lake Erie P. A broken line marked by many letters A, B, N, O, etc., appears in the east. There are no latitude or longitude markings, blank verso. Framed in a shaped contemporary gilt wooden frame and matted under a cream colored matte. Bearing an old Graham Arader Gallery...
