About the Item
A fantastic framed Japanese woodblock triptych by Utagawa Kunisada II (Toyokuni IV) entitled "Twilight Snow at Mount HIra" from the series "Eight Views of Omi", Edo period, circa 1850, Japan.
The triptych is comprised of three vertical oban sheets featuring a charming snowy winter scene along the frozen marshy shores of Lake Biwa. The Hira mountain range rising up behind the lake, creating a dramatic backdrop.
In the foreground, the scene is composed of a pair of women watching over three children as they roll a large ball of snow, presumably to make a snowman, while a pair of white cranes fly overhead. To the side, two gentlemen watch with amusement while leaning against a carriage. All the figures dressed in colorful and elaborate kimono and wearing geta clogs.
"Eight Views of Omi" was a well known subject matter first popularized by Utagawa Hiroshige, and expanded upon by a number of ukiyo-e artists, including Utagawa Kunisada II (Toyokuni IV). Oftentimes, historical figures, or characters from fiction, were interposed with the various views. The figures in this print may be related to the Tale of Genji.
Utagawa Kunisada II (1823 - 1880), also known as Toyokuni IV and Kunimasa, was Japanese ukiyo-e (woodblock) artist of the late Edo to early Meiji periods. He took the Kunisada name from his father-in-law after marrying into the family. While never as famous as his father-in-law, Utagawa Kunisada, he nonetheless served as head of the Utagawa school and achieved commercial success.

A delightful Japanese six panel painted paper screen featuring the beloved figure Hotei, Edo Period, early 19th century.
Hotei, called Budai in China, and known as the Laughing Buddha or Fat Buddha in the West, is considered to be an emanation of Maitreya, the Buddha of the Future.
In Japan, he also holds a special place as one of the Seven Lucky Gods, being the god of fortune, and protector of children.
He is always portrayed as a mirthful and corpulent man, dressed in loose robes that show off his round belly. He carries a sack with him, said to be filled with treasure. As the protector of children, he is often portrayed with them playing on or around him, as he is here. The children portrayed in this screen are dressed in Chinese style clothing...
