About the Item
This Modern midcentury lithographic work printed by Cuno for the American artist Benton Murdock Spruance is titled and inscribed as a gift to Miss Annabelle and dated 1948 with the edition being numbered of 35. This work was first published in black and white in 1947 and this edition in color was printed one year later. The artist was born in Philidelphia in 1904. A painter, printmaker and architect he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts from 1925-1929 He eventually became among other things an art teacher himself. His personal love was for printmaking which he took up in Paris after travel abroad on scholarship study. His career was firmly established by the 1930s on a national level based on his bold graphic urban themed black and white works in this medium.
Lithography was a major inspiration during the WPA and its hold on the art world was strong allowing many artists and the American art market to thrive during the depression through government support. Later in life, he continued to experiment and work with color while concentrating on mystical and mythological themes. Of particualr note is his services to other artists and to the nation as a whole by his tireless work in these fields. He is credited with much of Philadelphia's public art not as a creator but as a supporter and promoter of artists and their impacts on communities. His appointment to the head of the Philidelphia Arts Council in 1953 was instrumental in this goal and his push for and adoption of a percent point budget for each public construction project being used for art allowed greater spending and support that became common throughout the nation. He works are held in numerous public institutions including the Guggenheim, The National Gallery, The Metropolitan Museum of Art as well as many libraries and public buildings. This work is listed in the artist's catalog raisonne' “Prints by Benton Murdock Spruance” authored by Ruth E. Fine and Robert F Looney. This work is in a period frame and matte style with little to no fading or toning. Of particular interest is the inscription by the artist making this a very personal work from his hand and not one seen often on the market due to number and period of completion.

Benton Murdoch Spruance
A pioneer in color lithography, Benton Spruance spent most of his life in Philadelphia, where he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and became one of the city’s leading artists. In the twenties and thirties Spruance was known for prints that one critic described as his “velvety urban scenes and ‘social conscious’ series,” which chronicled the life of ordinary men and women at work and play. However, Spruance was also a painter and draftsman who during this period took advantage of two Guggenheim fellowships to travel throughout the United States and Europe and sketch landscapes. In the forties Spruance began producing moody, psychologically charged lithographic portraits of women, followed by mystically tinged work, based on biblical passages, that became increasingly subtle and sculptural in effect. Despite the demand for his work (he produced more than 500 lithographs during his career), Spruance continued to teach. At the time of his death, he was chairman of the art department at Beaver College and had recently retired from the chairmanship of the printmaking department at Philadelphia College of Art.

Andre Derain Etching signed in pencil
By Andre Darin
Located in Hudson, NY
Andre Derain was born in Chatou France in 1880. He met Matisse early in his life but was conscripted into the French army in 1901. After his service and when released Matisse convinced his parents to allow him to stop training as an engineering student to develop his artistic talents. He devoted himself full time to painting and attended the Academie Julian. He developed his early important style with close friends Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse. This became known as Fauvism and helped to usher in the other modern movements in art throughout the 20th century. The notable art dealer Ambroise Vollard sent Derain to London to work on a series of city-themed paintings that cemented his career as an important world-class artist. In 1907 his entire studios...
