About the Item
The Little Marchioness from Old Curiosity Shop – Kyd Character Print after Dickens, ca. 1889
This original chromolithograph features the character known as the Little Marchioness from Charles Dickens’s novel *The Old Curiosity Shop*, first published in 1840–41. A minor but memorable figure, the Little Marchioness is depicted here with a crooked back, oversized apron, and bonnet, turning her head upward with a curious, alert expression. She appears frail but spirited, a survivor in the harsh world of Victorian London, where she serves as both helper and companion to Dick Swiveller.
THE MARCHIONESS.
" But, please, will you leave a card or message ?" (Old Curiosity - Chap. Ii)
Illustrated by Joseph Clayton Clarke, better known by his pseudonym “Kyd,” this print is part of the series titled “The Characters of Charles Dickens,” published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in the late 19th century. Kyd’s humorous and poignant interpretations of Dickensian figures were printed in rich chromolithography after his original watercolor drawings and distributed internationally by Tuck’s branches in London, Paris, and New York.
The Little Marchioness represents the kind of overlooked, downtrodden yet morally upright characters Dickens was known for championing. Kyd’s depiction balances caricature with sympathy, capturing her ragged dignity through expressive posture and detail. The soft muted background enhances the warmth and subtlety of the image.
These prints were sold individually or in themed portfolios and remain highly collectible as visual tributes to Dickens’s enduring literary world.
