Medieval Fashion Ensemble from Rome & Venice, 14th–15th Century, Published 1845

About the Item

Medieval Fashion Ensemble from Rome and Venice, 14th–15th Century This striking set of three hand-colored costume prints, drawn from the influential 1845 publication "Costumes Historiques des XIIIe, XIVe et XVe Siècles," offers a rare and visually cohesive glimpse into medieval European attire. Each figure is rendered with precision and clarity, providing a vivid representation of the garments worn by influential societal roles in 14th and 15th century Italy. These prints are particularly notable for their accuracy, having been drawn from authentic period sources including paintings and sculptures. The first print, titled No. 8 - Noble Romaine, features a Roman noblewoman from the 14th century. Her attire, a flowing rose-pink gown with finely pleated details, is draped with a long pale blue cloak. Her headdress is modest yet elegant, reflecting both piety and social status. The understated pose and tranquil expression imbue the composition with grace and nobility. In the second image, No. 9 - Podestat, we see a richly robed Podestà, a chief magistrate figure common in Italian city-states. He is clad in a gold-patterned ceremonial robe lined with fur, suggesting his elevated status and authority. At his side stands a young page holding a ceremonial sword, further emphasizing the Podestà's prestige and judicial power. The detailing on the robe is remarkably intricate, capturing the luxurious textile designs of the time. The third print, No. 10 - Avocats Des Églises, depicts a church advocate or ecclesiastical official. With trumpet in hand and dressed in short gray robes adorned with gold trim and red hose, he exudes the confident demeanor of a ceremonial herald. The stylized trumpet and confident gesture mark him as a figure of communicative and religious authority. Each of these prints offers an educational and decorative insight into medieval costume history, appealing to collectors, fashion historians, and designers alike. Condition: All three prints are in very good condition with clean margins and only faint signs of age, such as minor toning and tiny edge spots. Colors remain vibrant, and the paper is stable and intact. Framing tips: For best presentation, consider framing these three prints together in a horizontal triptych within a single long mat and frame. Use archival-quality materials with an off-white or antique cream mat to complement the tones. A gold or dark wood frame would enhance the historical richness of the imagery. Alternatively, each print can be framed separately and hung in a linear arrangement to suit a gallery wall.
