About the Item
Moss Phlox and Greek Saffron Crocus hand coloured botanical print 1874
This elegant hand coloured botanical print from 1874 features two delicate and colourful alpine plants, Phlox subulata and Crocus sativus graecus. It was published by George Bell and Sons in London as part of the second series of Alpine Plants, a renowned Victorian work that blends botanical science with fine natural illustration.
At the top of the plate is Phlox subulata, commonly known as Moss Phlox or Creeping Phlox. This low-growing perennial forms a mat of needle-like foliage and is covered in spring with starry flowers in shades of soft pink and lavender. In this illustration, the trailing stems and small clustered blooms are depicted with grace and detail, showing their ornamental quality and ground-hugging nature.
Below is Crocus sativus graecus, a cultivated variety of the saffron crocus native to the Mediterranean. Known for producing the world’s most expensive spice, saffron, this species bears pale purple flowers with vivid orange-red stigmas. The print beautifully captures the graceful arch of the long narrow leaves and the richness of the flower’s internal markings and vibrant saffron threads.
Printed using lithography and coloured by hand, each plate in the Alpine Plants series is unique. This example stands out for its crisp detail and lively contrast between the cool lavender hues of the crocus and the soft pinks of the phlox. The paper is thick and cream-toned with generous margins, and the image area is clean and well preserved.
This print is ideal for framing in a natural history or botanical-themed setting and would appeal to collectors and garden enthusiasts alike. Its subtle colour palette makes it especially suitable for soft-toned or vintage interior decor.
