About the Item

Mr Bumble from Oliver Twist – Victorian Dickens Character Lithograph by Kyd, c.1889 Description: This vivid chromolithograph portrays Mr Bumble, the officious and pompous beadle from Charles Dickens' Oliver Twist (1837–39). Created by the British illustrator Joseph Clayton Clarke—who signed his work as “Kyd”—this image is part of his iconic series of character portraits published by Raphael Tuck & Sons in the late 1880s. The print offers both artistic flair and literary recognition, making it a prized piece for collectors of Dickensiana or Victorian illustration. Mr Bumble is rendered in striking caricature: rotund and self-important, he stands in profile, nose lifted in disdain and one finger raised as if making a pronouncement. His elaborate uniform, including a blue coat with gold trim, tricorn hat, and staff of office tucked under his arm, reflects his inflated sense of authority. Dickens masterfully used Bumble as a satirical figure representing the cruelty and hypocrisy of the Poor Law system, and Kyd's portrait exaggerates these traits with wit and precision. The lithographic technique brings out the richness of his attire, with careful shading and a warm palette of ochres, reds, and powder blue. The neutral background—a subtle wash of rust and grey—adds atmosphere while keeping attention on the figure. As with all of Kyd's work, the print balances caricature with storytelling, making even secondary characters unforgettable. This piece is part of a celebrated set of illustrations that helped define the visual identity of Dickens’s characters for generations. Mr Bumble’s exaggerated moralism and comical air are captured here in one of the most enduring artistic interpretations of the role. Condition report: Original chromolithograph, circa 1889. Light foxing scattered across the background but no creasing or tears. Colors remain vibrant, and the sheet is in stable condition. Framing tips: A gold or antique oak frame with a soft ivory or tan mat would complement the warm palette of Mr Bumble’s attire. A thin inner mount line in blue could echo the coat and subtly link the matting to the subject. Signed on the plate" Par Gavarni". From series of "Masques et Visages". Titled on the lower. Very Good conditions. Paul Gavarni (Paris, 1804 – 1866). Gavarni's father, Sulpice Chevalier, was from a family line of coopers from Burgundy.
