About the Item
Title:
Mr Pickwick from Pickwick Papers – Kyd Character Print after Dickens, ca. 1889
Description:
This original chromolithograph portrays Mr Samuel Pickwick, the affable and dignified founder of the Pickwick Club, from Charles Dickens’s debut novel *The Pickwick Papers*, first published in 1836–37. Standing with one hand behind his back and the other raising a glass, Mr Pickwick is shown in formal attire—white breeches, waistcoat, and tailcoat—with a watch fob hanging at his front. His gentle expression and round figure reflect his benevolent nature and comic charm.
The illustration is by Joseph Clayton Clarke, who worked under the pseudonym “Kyd.” An English artist born in 1856, Kyd became famous for his humorous and highly recognizable interpretations of Dickensian characters. This image forms part of the late 19th-century series “The Characters of Charles Dickens,” published by Raphael Tuck & Sons and printed at the Fine Art Works in London. The series was distributed through Tuck’s international branches in London, Paris, and New York.
Mr Pickwick’s portrayal here captures the essence of Dickens’s original character—a good-hearted, curious gentleman whose misadventures and friendships drive the narrative of the novel. Kyd’s clean composition and delicate coloring evoke both period charm and comic liveliness.
These prints were issued both individually and in portfolio sets and remain highly desirable to collectors of Dickens illustration, Victorian chromolithography, and literary art.
