About the Item
Mrs Gamp from Martin Chuzzlewit – Kyd Character Print after Dickens, ca. 1889
Description:
This original chromolithograph portrays the unforgettable character of Mrs Sarah Gamp from Charles Dickens’s novel *Martin Chuzzlewit*, first published in 1843–44. Dressed in her voluminous black cloak and bonnet, with her unmistakable red-spotted bag and umbrella, Mrs Gamp is depicted in her usual flustered, cheerful manner. Known for her malapropisms, questionable nursing practices, and fondness for gin, she remains one of Dickens’s most enduring comic creations.
The illustration was drawn by Joseph Clayton Clarke, better known as “Kyd,” a British artist (1856–1937) celebrated for his humorous and expressive character studies based on Dickens’s novels. This print is part of the celebrated series “The Characters of Charles Dickens,” published by Raphael Tuck & Sons. Based on Kyd’s original watercolor designs, these character studies were reproduced using rich chromolithography and printed at the Fine Art Works in London, with international distribution through Tuck’s offices in London, Paris, and New York.
Kyd’s interpretation of Mrs Gamp emphasizes her round, good-natured face and familiar accessories, rendered with charm and satirical warmth. The character’s name and the title of the book appear discretely in the lower margin.
These prints were sold individually and in portfolio collections during the late Victorian period, and they remain highly collectible for their literary and artistic appeal.
Condition report:
Chromolithograph on cream paper. Light scattered foxing, mostly in the margins. Image area clean and vibrant. No tears or repairs. Sheet in very good condition overall.
Framing tips:
A dark wood or black frame with a cream or ivory mat will complement the tones of the print and suit the period character. Makes a charming addition to any Dickens-themed display.
